Who Succeeds? A Team of Individual Stars or a Team that Works Together?

marg2In sport, I always find it fascinating when the underdog wins a match against a team that is loaded with individual stars. Well this is something that has some science behind it and for businesses can be the difference between going ok to sky rocketing ahead.

In this TED talk from Margaret Heffernan, she explains why a team with a couple of superstars will be outdone by a team that is a cohesive unit. We were always taught that success was to do as best as we can and climb the ladder to the top, well this looks as though this doesn’t lead to driving the best productivity.

In Margaret’s talk she explains why a culture of helpfulness will outperform individual intelligence. She says as a leader, we don’t have to know all the answers but encourage outstanding collaboration and bring the best out in others.

There are some absolute gold nuggets in this talk, well worth spending 15 minutes to watch it.

My key out takes are we need to get to know our staff and they need to get to know each other as this collaboration will drive higher productivity. It’s not about having one or two superstars and expecting them to take you to success, it’s getting everyone on board working together.

Hope you enjoy this excellent TED talk.
