Recruiting exceptional individuals is a topic I frequently discuss with retailers, and it’s one of my favourite training courses to conduct. Having run a number of these courses over the past few years, I always find that most attendees lack any formal training in how to recruit; they learn through trial and error.
Unfortunately, many continue to make the same mistakes, settling for the best candidates available instead of striving for the best possible fit. In today’s fiercely competitive market, settling isn’t enough—you must hire the best to outshine your competition.
Despite various recruitment tools and resources, many attendees don’t grasp their full value or use them effectively. Applicants today are well-prepared for interviews, often researching common questions and rehearsing responses.
To attract top talent, it’s essential to define your ideal candidate upfront, considering key personality traits, qualifications, and experience. Be innovative in your recruitment approach; if your current methods aren’t yielding great candidates, it’s time for a change.
Prior to interviews, arrange interactions with applicants to observe their demeanour in a more relaxed setting. This allows you to gauge their punctuality, communication skills, and demeanour—crucial aspects that contribute to the overall fit within your organisation.
During interviews, maintain a structured approach, asking consistent questions to compare responses effectively. Focus on open-ended questions to encourage applicants to share more about themselves. Having two interviewers allows for comprehensive note-taking and deeper probing into responses.
Recruiting the right person is challenging, but it’s essential for the success of your business and the satisfaction of your customers and employees alike. By following these tips and striving for excellence in recruitment, you’ll build a stronger, more successful organisation.
