I came across this very interesting TED talk from Marco Alvera who presents a unique idea to improve your business success. It’s simply improving the fairness levels in the workplace. Alvera explains that we are all born with an innate sense of fairness and provides an interesting example to prove his theory. He continues by adding, as adults this doesn’t change, we all know what’s wrong from right.
When businesses promote fairness across all facets of their business they experience higher levels of motivation, engagement and therefore productivity. Encourage your team to do what they feel is right and not what’s selfish, quick or convenient. Not only is this a key ingredient for fairness it’s also a great motivator.
Improving fairness sounds simple yet it’s not a straightforward process. It requires companies to let go and trust their team, so it’s risky. However, the payoff with more highly motivated team members is huge. Alvera says companies have to dare to be fair!
Businesses that value their people for what they are trying to do and not just the outcome achieve a higher level of fairness. Conversely, it’s not penalising your people for bad luck or making an honest mistake. Your team has to feel you have their back and you trust them so they can make the right decision under varying circumstances. When they feel your support in this way you’ll get better buy-in and engagement.
It’s well worth investing 14 minutes to watch this very insightful talk and analyse in your business how you could improve your fairness score.
