During a number of training sessions I run, the topic of what it takes to be a great leader comes up. I often ask participants to think of a list of great business leaders and unfortunately, they struggle. Richard Branson and Nelson Mandela are the two most popular. It’s a very short list.
Research seems to support the fact that leadership in Australia is fairly poor, few staff are actively engaged. In fact a recent survey from engaged Marketing found that only 20% of staff would actively promote their workplace as a great place to work. This is a powerful overall measure of employee engagement as it is based on recommendation not satisfaction.
I recently watched a TED presentation about Great Leadership from Roselinde Torres, who is a senior partner and managing director at Boston Consulting group, a world renowned organisation. Through years of dedicated research on the topic of leadership she has found that great leaders and the leaders of the future focus on the answers to 3 critical questions.
