Leadership Is Broken, Here’s How To Fix It

I have spoken for some time about the lack of great leaders in today’s business world. We also suffer from low levels of employee engagement and there is a distinct lack of trust in today’s society. Here is an absorbing TED talk that is well worth watching if you want to be a better leader and therefore be better able to attract and retain a top team.

Halla Tómasdóttir thinks global leaders need to change their ways — or risk becoming irrelevant. Halla is the CEO of the B Team, a group of global leaders working together to transform business for a better world. In this fascinating and intimate TED talk, Halla talks about the three areas that leaders have to focus on:

  1. Climate change
  2. Inequality
  3. Lack of trust

She believes modern leaders need to be courageous yet humble and have a moral compass guided by a set of principles. Leaders need to not only share why their business exists but how they are going to do business and how they are going to lead. The key principles of the B team are sustainability, equality and accountability.

Halla is a firm believer that it’s not just up to senior management to lead, we are all leaders inside. She provides an excellent example of how one young lady stepped up into a leadership role at the tender age of 16.

I hope you enjoy this 14 minute TED talk and it provides food for thought and on how we can all improve our own leadership skills.
