The litany of retailers closing their doors has been ever present for the last few years as economic pressures, competition, high wages and rents have started to bite. We’re now seeing large numbers of empty shops in both shopping centres and traditional high street shopping destinations. So, have landlords been too greedy with their annual rental increases when retailers are struggling to beat or even match last year’s sales? What do shopping centre owners need to do to avoid other retailers from pulling the pin and closing altogether or going online? Something needs to change or more retailers and therefore their landlords will suffer when they close their doors.
