What Does Loving Your Partner Have To Do With Great Leadership?

Hard to see how these two things could be related, yet they are. I’m a big fan of leadership guru Simon Sinek, with his excellent video on the importance of the why and how the why was a game changer for Apple and others. I recently watched Simon’s brilliant interview about loving your wife (partner) and how this relates to great leadership.

In this captivating interview, Simon, asks the interviewer does he love his wife, and the reply is yes. Simon then follows up with it didn’t just happen suddenly (sorry to those who believe in love at first sight), it built up over time. And that’s the same as great leadership, it doesn’t just happen, it takes time. Leaders need to consistently do the little things that build trust over time.

Simon acknowledges that leadership is hard and leaders have to have courage. It’s often a thankless and lonely job, yet very rewarding. He defines leadership as taking care of the people in that leaders’ sphere of influence which is up to 150 people.

This video is certainly well worth the 11 minutes to watch if you want to be that great leader your people deserve you to be.
