I am a big fan of Jim Collins, the author of a number of books, with my favourite being “Good to Great”. If you haven’t read this book, I’d strongly suggest you do, as it contains great lessons for becoming a better leader.
Jim has been recently asked by his many students and readers what advice he would have for dealing with the current crisis we are all facing. He provides his thoughts in a short but powerful video, I thought would be well worth sharing.
Jim talks about his experience meeting with Admiral Stockdale, who spent 8 years in a POW camp, not knowing when or if he was going to survive. In his interview with Admiral Stockdale, Jim uncovered two absolute gems, which became a chapter in his book “Good to Great.”
When Jim asked how he survived, Admiral Stockdale said, “I never wavered that I would survive and this would be a defining event of my life that I would not trade.” How did he maintain this faith, it came down to two aspects:
1) Unwavering faith that I can and will prevail
2) Discipline to confront the brutal facts as they actually are.
This video is well worth watching as we all face our Stockdale moments.
