News that retail in 2020 has kicked off the year with record store closures is a sad and sorry story. Blaming a slow Christmas and bushfires is just the tip of the iceberg, as retailers that have struggled to stand out are now really feeling the pinch. We’ve seen this for some time with DJ’s and Myer, who over the past few years have lost customers, profit, and taken hits on their share prices. It’s going to be an even tougher year for retailers whose strategy has been to tread water as they’re overtaken by those making a clear point of difference and wowing their customers.
