8 Lessons on Building a Company People Enjoy Working For

I’m sure you would all agree that Netflix has certainly changed the way we watch movies and TV series. Patty McCord served as Chief –Talent Officer at Netflix for 14 years and was instrumental in developing the culture over this time. Her recent short TED talk, (it’s only 5 minutes) is well worth watching to learn about her 8 lessons on building a company people enjoy working for.

This is all about developing a positive culture where people are respected and turn up each day wanting to produce their best work. How good would your business be if that were the case? Unfortunately Patty shares a damning statistic, only 27% of employees say they strongly believe in their organisations values. There is much work to be done!

A few key take outs for me were:

  • “The assumption is that everyone comes to work to do a great job. You’ll be surprised at what you get.” I have long held this belief, that if we recruit right, all of your team will want to do a good job, often it’s leadership that gets in the way.
  • “The job of management is not to control, but build great teams.”
  • “People are ok with the truth. It’s the job of a leader to deliver the truth, both good and bad, in the moment they are doing it.” This philosophy resonates beautifully with our two on job coaching models.

Enjoy the talk.
